The defining act
In July 2014, Adadevoh suspected that a sick traveler in Lagos had Ebola and kept him isolated despite pressure to release him. She alerted Nigerian health authorities and helped initiate the response to the country's first case.
What was at stake
The patient had arrived in one of the world's largest cities and was expected at a conference. Releasing him could have seeded many chains of transmission; the hospital team was working without full protective resources.
What followed
Adadevoh contracted Ebola and died on August 19, 2014. Nigeria contained the outbreak and was declared Ebola-free that October.
